ABOUT THE ARTWORK

La Maison Verte is a two story green home in the tiny French village of Marnay sur Seine, a one hour train ride south of Paris. The stone built homes boasted 300 residents in the winter and 150 during the summer. The prized possession of this quaint provincial town is the Botanical Gardens, Jardin Botanique. The art residency, Les Pays, which I was participating in during the summer of 2015, was created by the gardens as a means to bring fresh vision to the gardens and tourists to the town. A requirement of the residency is to create artwork influenced in some form by the gardens. My main body of work during the one month residency was landscape works reflecting the daily bicycle journeys I took throughout the countryside. A portion of my work was created to speak of the relationship between the cacti plants of the gardens and the pain of human conflict. This work is 4x4.5" on 12x9 white bristol paper.

Rachael Van Dyke is a full-time artist creating abstract landscape and figurative work inspired by living off the grid in the Blue Ridge mountains and traveling abroad. Van Dyke is an avid artist-in-residence and has participated in national and international residencies. These residencies create new boundaries for her work and encourage an alteration of technique and expression. These boundaries also create stimulation as she is forced to understand and come to terms with her limitations. Being open to a new color palette or a new visual language to express the land and culture is necessary. Rachael chooses to explore the region through hiking or bicycling, visiting museums and historic sites, and trying her hand at engaging with local residents. Each body of work is influenced by place and tells a story of the people and land that she’s encountered. Instagram
