About The Artwork

It depends on your point of view. Who in the painting are the outcasts? There are tall, thin, large headed figures in the foreground. And there are small, simple figures in the background. Opposites, most true! Is it the outcasts who meekly stand back as the socially sanctioned ones enjoy the world? Or is it the outcasts, being pushed out, who gladly flee, leaving those that love convention far behind? Which ones are the Outcasts? What do you think? _____________________________________________ "Outcasts’ is about contrasts. In this piece, I painted the canvas in a traditional way, but I accented specific areas with a nontraditional technique. I masked off these areas and applied a thick impasto, smoothed out with a large palette knife. These areas dried for many days. During the drying time, I took a block of linoleum and hand carved an organic design. I then began to print, not with ink, but with a thinned oil paint, over the dried impasto areas. After it dried, I then super imprinted the areas a second time. This change in techniques helped me to reinforce the idea of contrasts for ‘Outcasts’.< Hanging wire attached. Beautifully finished with painted sides - no need to frame. Ready to and Enjoy!

Angles and lines, repeating patterns, and some circles - for relief. Angles and lines represent boundaries. I like boundaries, they make me feel safe, as do repeating patterns. They’re comforting because they’re familiar and expected. I’m an introvert and I find it stressful to cope with turmoil. So, I paint. I begin by drawing little sketched patterns on paper, dividing space. It frees me of distractions so I can focus my thoughts. I start to see things happen within the drawing and an idea for a painting begins to emerge. I transfer the drawing to the canvas. Alkyd (oil) is my medium of choice, but I also paint in acrylics. As I paint, I feel myself move into the painting. I work until I find what I’m looking for -- balance, harmony in smooth color fields, edgy transitions between the angles and lines, repeating patterns, and then some circles - for relief.
