About The Artwork

"Owen the Owl " is a 16" x 20" original painting on the very archival surface 1/8" Aquabord panel made in Texas by Ampersand. Owen is in watercolour on a faux gold leaf background that has a reflective surface very similar to the very, very expensive 24 kt gold genuine gold leaf. The painting is varnished and is ready to be inserted in a standard frame. Since it is varnished and on aquabord, it is framed without glass! I had fun painting Owen as a colourful barn owl. I added textured gold relief in the background and on the tree stump. The gold background is guilded and not painted so there is some slight texture and variation in reflection here and there automatically in the gold leaf as it is applied. Work is sold unframed and photo with frame is simply to give you an idea how it could look framed. Gold leaf is very hard to photograph since it reflects light and colours around the painting. For this reason, I provided several different views. I have been working with this gold leaf and the Ampersand surface for several years and just love them both. My customers have always been very happy with this collection.

When I paint, I am happy and feel whole. I paint the beauty of light and the joy I find in life! My work wants to be a sharing of a moment of serenity and balance. It is an expression and reconciliation of my inner dichotomy: I love creativity while needing structure; I love fluidity and softness of colors while craving realist details and lines. Consequently, for example, my watercolour demonstrate realism with colors much enhanced by my imagination. My paintings of sculptures and carvings depict the dancing light on crumbling brickwork, or pastel colors on the stone carvings. In my acrylic or watercolour “Leaves Series”, mysterious but serene light filters through the stems and leaves, water shimmers here and there as the leaves float on the pond. My oil paintings dance with vibrant colors on top of well-structured florals. My first art love was watercolour and my watercolour paintings have won many awards and I have completed major corporate commissions in watercolour. However, I am an explorer at heart and love to try new surfaces, new styles and techniques. I go from watercolour to acrylic paints to mixed media to realistic oils. In the last few years I have become obsessed with detailed oil florals especially of peonies and sunflowers.
