This is one painting in a series of 5 that look at Ohio's gerrymandered districts through a formal lens. It depicts the Columbus, OH voting district. These oddly-shaped districts are objectively fascinating and become more complex the more I learn about the inner workings of our political systems. Each twist and turn the district takes has highly specific, and often strange origins, like a big donor's address being included or excluded in its shape. The use of data to both create and to potentially innovate how districts are drawn is exciting.

Michael Roller is an abstract artist based in Cincinnati, Ohio. With a background in industrial design, Roller approaches art using a creative process that is both structured and improvisational. Through layering acrylic paints, he creates abstract compositions inspired by digital culture—balancing control and spontaneity. Small rectangles, parallel lines, and intersecting curves are common motifs in his work, with each painting based on personal memories, artifacts, and emotions. The result is a body of work that explores the intersection of design and abstract art, with each painting offering a glimpse into his relationship with the world.
