This painting started off as an exercise. By copying a section of a painting that I admire, helped me understand and gain greater empathy for the process involved in Peter Doig's painting "Milkyway" I was going to paint over it but as the days and weeks went by, I kept looking at it in my studio. I am a 54 year old British born painter living in France. I graduated in Fine Art at Bristol Polytechnic in 1992 and completed a Masters degree in Art education at Warwick University in 1997. I have exhibited my work in Lincolnshire, Norfolk, London, New York and across France. I describe my paintings as expressionistic. They are largely figurative and representational and are a reflection of my fascination with images that evoke a sense of intrigue. I create compositions that invite viewers to contemplate and interpret their own narratives. I want my work to transcend realism by embracing ambiguity and allowing the viewer to complete the narrative through their memories and experiences. In my recent series of paintings based around the garden pond, I explore parallels between the pond and images from the Hubble space telescope. The layers of refracted and reflected light look to me like distant galaxies in a self contained universe where imagination intertwine with memories and dreams. For the past fifteen years I have worked making electronic sculptures but have now returned to painting full time for a more immediate tool for expression.
