ABOUT THE ARTWORK

I've studied Zen Buddhism for many years and have a deep appreciation for the concept of holding space both figuratively and literally: space to breath, space for what's next, space to allow things to come together and fall apart and back together again. These works are both deceptively simple and complex; creating the layered effect and sense of depth and dimension takes time, patience, and more planning and thought than one might think while still leaving ample room for spontaneity and for the materials, colors, and application to surprise and speak. This series is also influenced by my study of quantum physics; matter is energy and our reality is made of waves and particles blinking in and out and back again. In viewing these works I hope one ponders are these bits of energy coming together? Coalescing? Orbiting one another or on the verge of flying apart? All my current works are painted using premium, studio-quality paints and canvas mounted to a 1/8 inch thick masonite board, then coated with an isolation barrier and sealed with a gloss varnish making the colors pop. Your painting is shipped with a 1" floating frame I build myself, typically from Alder wood, then hand-stained black. Your painting arrives with hanging hardware installed, and ready for you to hang and enjoy! There is no charge for the framing.

Based in Portland, Oregon I've worked for many years professionally as a Graphic Designer, Marketing Director, and brand builder. I've now shifted to abstract expressionist painting. The works of Sam Francis, Pollock, and many contemporaries inspire. Music, literature, science, and our shared pop-culture colors, imagery are grist for my creative mill. My technique is best described as controlled chaos, action painting, allowing the medium and moment to lead the way. The freedom of expression in abstract expressionist painting and the lack of an editor is both thrilling and terrifying. An avid reader and explorer of thoughts and ideas from Zen to Quantum Physics; these fields deeply influence my present work. I work primarily in acrylic but can incorporate some street art spray paints when the work calls for it. All works are created in my dedicated studio using studio-quality paints and canvas mounted on masonite boards. Every work is protected with an isolation coating and a final varnish. Each painting is shipped framed and arrives ready to hang. I hope my paintings ask more questions than they answer...
