Personal / Private
Our long-lasting and complex familiarisation with various kinds of images, ranging
from photography, video or hologram, has worn out our capability to respond and maintain
our eagerness to make sense of their inner connections and complex details; as a result, a sort
of mistrust in our very capacity of decoding images has built in.
To be more precise, rather than visual acuity, to see is a performance stemming
from the accomplishment of concord. This confers a particular meaning to the recognition of
data or elements of visual reality, blends them in with memory fragments, then interprets the
sequence, and relates to all of these in a personal way.
A complex process underlies our personal manner of cutting up from the vision the
elements, the details, the relations or the images that engage our interest. This individual,
personal ability to relate to, detach from, understand and interpret images has enabled me
to identify and question aspects of pictural structure and expression of a space I have called
personal/ private.
The works I have created recently share the interest in identifying and developing a
pictural investigation of what can be generically described as the personal or private space of
each person.
Rather than posing as a referential subject, I have been trying to define potential and
latent co-ordinates and relevant aspects of this space by relating them to recurrent elements
and meanings, as well as to sensations every person enjoys during a most privileged moment:
that of exploring of and/ or plunging into the private dimension.
Thus, by discarding deliberately and programmatically the prerogative of spectacular
images or contexts - expressive and inciting in themselves - I have moved on beyond their
anecdotic substance into building up images that evoke familiar or discrete contexts, generally
recognisable or dj vu.
The characters are part of images, situations and contexts attempting to develop a
quasi-archetypal typology of such private moments.
