About The Artwork

This is an original painting on stretched canvas, with the image continuing around the 1.5" sides so that no frame is required. It comes ready to hang. Lynne’s work has been shown in solo and group exhibitions in galleries and museums throughout the United States and abroad. Her art is owned by private and institutional collectors worldwide. Stan Bowman, professor emeritus of the Cornell University Art Department, said in a review of Lynne’s exhibit at the Clinton House ArtSpace in Ithaca: “Taetzsch is a painter very much in the tradition of the best of 20th century abstraction.” Describing her painting process, Lynne says: I am of course indebted to all the artists who came before me, for the wonderful ways they have transmuted color, line and shape. Some of my very special art connections are Miro, Kandinsky, Matisse, DeKooning, Hans Hoffman, Helen Frankenthaler, and Joan Mitchell. In the early stages of a painting, I work very fast. This helps give my art its sense of energy and spontaneity. I like to trick my conscious mind by not letting it have too much control over what happens. In some ways I’m creating a mess or a problem that I then have to solve in order to make the painting work. It’s the painting surface that I love - the lusciousness of color in its thick and thin varieties, flat and opaque to keep the eye on the surface, or transparent and airy to suggest deep space. My goal is to stay as close to the edge as possible, to keep that sense of organic happening, as if the painting had grown itself rather than having been crafted by me.

"PAINTING IS AN ADVENTURE WHERE I DISCOVER COLOR, FORM AND LINE IN A NEW WAY ON EACH CANVAS. I've loved art since I was a kid spending all my allowance on art and craft supplies. When I was a teenager, I sketched and painted portraits of everyone in the family who would sit for me. At Cooper Union in NYC, I studied life drawing and two and three-dimensional design, but I also fell in love with the abstract expressionist painters I saw in the galleries downtown. My own art became more abstract until I found a way to express myself through gesture and improvisation. Each new blank canvas is a challenge and an adventure. I paint standing up at an easel, listening to music, responding spontaneously to the image in front of me. I'm in love with color, form and movement--exploring new paths for the eye to take as it sweeps the emerging composition." Lynne’s dynamic paintings have been exhibited widely in galleries and museums, and her work is collected by individuals and institutions throughout the world. She paints in her home studio in Ithaca, NY.
