Nick Grove

About the Artist

Nick Grove

United Kingdom

Nick Grove RSMA is a British painter based in Stamford, England.

Working primarily in oil, Grove is best known for his atmospheric landscapes, cityscapes and coastal paintings created directly from life. Whether painting on the streets of London, along the Norfolk coast, or in historic cities around the world, his work is rooted in careful observation and a desire to capture the unique character and spirit of a place.

Largely self-taught, Grove developed his practice through thousands of hours spent painting outdoors and from the live model. This commitment to direct observation remains at the heart of his work today. Rather than simply recording a scene, his paintings seek to convey the experience of being present within it—the changing light, atmosphere and emotion that define a particular moment.

Grove is an elected member of the Royal Society of Marine Artists and a member of the Chelsea Art Society. His work is represented by Thompson's Galleries and held in private collections throughout the United Kingdom and internationally. He has exhibited extensively, including at the Royal Society of Portrait Painters, the Royal Society of Marine Artists and the Royal Institute of Oil Painters.

In 2025, he was awarded the Julian Barrow Award for a Sense of Place at the Chelsea Art Society Annual Exhibition, recognising his ability to capture the atmosphere and identity of a location through paint.

Alongside his professional practice, Grove teaches drawing and painting through workshops, private tuition and Stamford School of Art, encouraging others to develop their powers of observation and creative confidence.

His work continues to explore the relationship between place, memory and experience, celebrating the beauty and richness of everyday life through direct engagement with the world around him.
