ABOUT THE ARTWORK
Peonies #11 is the eleventh painting in the Peonies series and the 3rd painting in the 16" x 20" quartet of paintings represented in Peonies 9, 10, 11, & 12. My process begins with a collection of deadheaded flowers from the garden at our home in SW Denver. My wife, Kathy, photographs the flowers and uploads the pictures to be digitized. I work with the images in a photo enhancement software to adjust placement, values, shadows, and contrast and compose a working draft. Next, I lay down the primary base colors of the selected image. I always prefer using oil paint to create my paintings, rather than watercolor or acrylic paint, since it dries more slowly. Also, linseed oil thins the different paint for mixing the perfect color. Hence, slower dry time allows more opportunity for blending and shading. Consequently, smells of oil paint and linseed oil fill my studio, sometimes located in the Great Room of our home. Finally, I seal the finished painting to preserve the integrity of the colors. I find peonies flowers to be a wonderful source of inspiration with so many shapes and different hues. A fantastic display of iridescent light and color.

This mystical approach has become my style. Though my paintings tend toward the representational, I am creating landscapes from within; hoping to transcend the physical, mental or spiritual and instead portray a measure of all three. As my creations have evolved from realistic imagery I always limited the context of foreground, background, etc, to the direct identification of the subject itself: river, tree, or flower and to isolation of colors and patterns. I hope to carry forward this choice to utilize strong images, refined to an essence, bringing forth artwork which is sublime and accessible.”
