Marilu Zahn has created some kind art almost as far back as she can remember. Born and raised in Bronx, New York, to the second-generation of immigrants from Germany and Italy, her creativity was nurtured by her grandfather—himself a carpenter and painter—and a grandmother who noticed her quick mastery of age-old embroidery and crochet techniques. Her natural talent was honed in advanced art classes while still in public school. Later, she studied anatomy at the County Center in White Plains, N.Y. and received credit for her work at a popular graphic arts firm. Zahn went on to receive a B.F. A. at SUNY Purchase, where she was mentored by Murray Zimiles, Hans Van Dyck and Sy Sillman, a student of Josef Albers, the renowned color theorist. She also studied photography with Jan Groover and Jed Devine, and belonged to an admired group of visual artists known as “The Shamans." She taught a figure drawing studio at Sarah Lawrence College, before being accepted into the New York University Art in Venice, Italy Masters Program, headed by Angiola Churchill. Currently, Zahn teaches a watercolor class in the Behavioral Health unit at New York Presbyterian Hospital, NYC, as well as Tai Chi. Zahn’s work—including portraits has been exhibited in numerous individual and group shows as well as her own show. She also offers private art lessons.
