About The Artwork
This framed acrylic on canvas painting is inspired by the myth of Persephone which features the pomegranate. I first saw beautiful pomegranates growing in Tuscany where sketched and photographed them in preparation for this piece.. In the Greek myth Persephone was kidnapped by Hades and taken to the Underworld. Her mother, Demeter went into mourning and as a result all green things ceased to grow. Zeus could not leave the Earth to die so he commanded Hades to return Persephone to her mother.. Anyone who consumed food or drink in the Underworld was doomed to spend eternity there. Persephone ate no food, but Hades tricked her into eating 4 pomegranate seeds so she had to spend 4 months in the Underworld every year -. For those four months Demeter does not allow anything to grow... and we have Winter.
