About The Artwork

This is an oil painting on canvas with some charcoal used in the execution. It bought, it will be shipped in a crate. If the purchaser prefers no frame, then the price can be changed. It is very easy to install as it has been stored by hanging on the wall, it is wired and ready to go. The painting is done in the tradition of gestural abstraction with both brushes and palette knives. It was influenced in color by Joan Mitchell and paint application by DeKooning. The painting is based on memories of spending summers and other times with my grandparents near Tea Kettle Spout Lake in upstate New York When visiting I would pick potatoes with my grandfather. I wanted to capture the sense of freedom, peace and warmth that I felt as a child living in the country with them. I also wanted to capture that childlike sense of amazement when digging in the dry dirt and finding potatoes. I used gestural layered brush work that might evoke the physicality of working in the dirt. I use abstraction not to evoke the literal memory but to call upon a sense memory that we all have as children.
