Rooted in the traditions of geometric abstraction, my work is neither political nor narrative. Instead, it is intended to invoke universal human emotions such as ambiguity, curiosity, tension, humor, insecurity and wonder. My painting process is a constant and ongoing battle between the analytical and spontaneous sides of the self, and despite the appearance of organization and structure, I engage in a great deal of improvisation. I am a formalist in the sense that I am mostly concerned with the interactions of line, color, shape, form, texture and mark making, and my intention is for these visual elements to resolve into a negotiated and even vicarious balance upon contemplation. Likewise, my recent work attempts to create “audible” rhythm with visual vocabulary. My desire is for viewers to not only look at, but also “listen to” these paintings, in the hope that they will discover something new with each viewing.
