About The Artwork

Subject: Observatorio Manuel Foster, Santiago, Chile Description: The painting portrays the Manuel Foster Observatory, erected in 1903 on top of Cerro San Cristobal to facilitate observations of the southern sky using cutting-edge technology. A modern gondola can be seen in the foreground and radio antennae in the background. The composition looks down a long street flanked by lush vegetation framing the observatory. Hills are places where the earth meets the sky, and across cultures and time, have been used by humans to explore beyond the boundaries of our terrestrial lives. They are remote areas on the outskirts of civilization used for innovation and technological progress. Process: Plein-air drawing, painted in studio.
