Kimberly loves to paint and wanted to be an artist at 5 years old. In addition to painting and as a multifaceted artist she is an avid drawer and uses pen, marker, pencil, ink, crayon and pastel on paper, writes obsessively in her journals, makes boho jewelry, loves her film camera and writes her own rhymes in poetry. She was born in San Francisco and painted in the Bay for grad school. Kimberly focuses on an eclectic, colorful abstract style incorporating imperfect geometric shapes, made-up symbolism and creates her own unique patterns straight from her head. No painting is planned, yet sometimes pre-meditated and develops in detail with each new color, each new mark, as the elements evolve into a finished piece. Now at 34 years old, Kimberly has shown in cafes and bars within the Bay Area and sells privately. As part of what fuels her creative practice, she spends time at the beach swimming in the icy bay waters, travels with a particular love for Asia, Latin America and California. Kimberly is dedicated to her health and is culturally aware from her travels with European descent and is a quarter Japanese. She wonders if her own mix of cultures and awareness surrounding her experience of the world has contributed to the symbolic and universal language in her paintings. Often her paintings are referenced to aboriginal and outsider art with its patterns and obsessive markings. A labyrinth seems to be a theme in her works, some sort of wandering pathway and wave-like patterns guide the eye around to each corner of the painting, with no central focus. Her paintings show motion and both rainbow and limited color palettes. She uses the tiniest of tiny brushes to make detailed marks and currently works with acrylic. Kimberly is playful and endless with her thoughts and creations. Kimberly paints in a sophisticated-childlike style; a painting is made with childlike qualities, yet is clearly (or maybe not!) made by an adult. Kimberly appreciates and collects prints and works made by artists and enjoys trading art for art. Her long time favorite artists are Wayne Thiebaud and Basquiat. Kimberly is a loud and unafraid free spirit and paints without inhibition. Although considered a trained artist with her Masters degree, she considers herself self-taught in that she has stayed true to her innate abilities within her artwork after graduate school.
