'Plains' is a timeless, contemporary piece of fine artwork by the Award Winning Artist Janet Gammans. It is atmospheric, vibrant yet harmonious with great tonal depth and value using natural tones of blue, green, white and 'earthy' brown hues. The artwork has been painted in a painterly impressionistic but modern style. The work has been inspired by my time spent by the coast on land, studying, drawing and 'living the life'. The artwork evokes an emotional response to forms, atmosphere and textures from rural aspects of rustic landscape. I have come to realize that it’s not ‘what you paint’ that is important, but ‘how you paint it’. So in my interpretation of painting a subject, I try to maintain the essence of what first inspired me to paint it. For me, what is fundamental in my paintings are light, subtlety of color, harmony, depth and drama, while still staying true to the subject. In my finished work, I hope that I have conveyed to the viewer a sense of mood, which was present at the time of painting it.ʺ Acrylic is my preferred medium when painting en plein air. Because the quick drying process helps me to work with a more reactive, immediate approach whilst hoping to achieve flow and continuity within the painting. More layers are applied at home in my studio, but the initial painting is inspired by the response to what is in front of me. There is only so long, I can withstand the elements of the countryside with our British weather! I work initially with my hands/fingers because I find the brush at first, becomes an obstruction to my initial interpretation of the subject. I find I can manipulate the paint with ease in this way to give an even 'flow' and mix of texture and color. The artwork has been painted on stretched primed cotton canvas. The image would suit most home interiors and enhance large areas of interest to create an eye catching feature and interesting focal point.

Janet works from her studio in South Cambridgeshire, as a freelance artist, supplying semi abstract, impressionistic and fine art to publishing companies worldwide. Her paintings are sold from galleries throughout the South of England and internationally via the web. She has become a much recognized artist for her subject matter and her unique creative style of work. ʺI enjoy experimenting with all mediums but watercolor and acrylic are the ones I find most satisfying. Depending on the subject, I find that it would either lend itself more to the delicate touches of watercolor or to the stronger and more vibrant colors of acrylic paint and each would allow me to translate a ‘mood’ a subject might evoke”.
