ABOUT THE ARTWORK

Subject: The painting depicts La Presa del Limonero, a rock dam inaugurated in October 1983, with the city of Málaga stretching out below. The dam, which controls the flow of the Guadalmedina river, can be seen to represent the reach of influence of the port of Málaga. Its construction has allowed for more consistent conditions at the river delta, supporting the modernization and expansion of the port, and has helped provide more water for the growing city. Description: This painting captures a dam on the river Guadalmedina which stands above the city of Málaga in striking contrast to the urban landscape. The massive scale and materials of the construction are of the surrounding mountains, despite being an artificial construction. The viewer is left to ponder the power and impact of human infrastructure on the natural world and the interplay between our insatiable need for resources and the massive indifference and power of the natural world. Process: Plein-air drawing, painted in the studio.
