ABOUT THE ARTWORK

This is the portrait of my mother seeing also through water. My aim was to study the interaction between water and light through the analysis of image distortion. I chose a subject who holds a very important place in my life, my mother and I created a portrait of her and the water (where life begins), both as my life-givers.

Valeria Latorre is a visual artist based in the South of Italy. Her research is on water, it is expressed through hyperrealistic paintings, photography and video making. Her work aims to show water in ways it is not usually seen, using different media to express the hidden faces of water. In the painting and photography work light and movement expose the shape of water revealed through image distortion. In the video work dance and music express the physical features and rhythm of water. Philosophy and science studies support the evolution of her research which is deeply influenced by Japanese Wabi Sabi aesthetics.
