JOËLLE DUBOIS, THE PAINTER OF PLANTS “What I dream of is an art of balance, purity, tranquility, without worrying or worrying subjects, which is, for every brain worker, for the businessman as well as for the artist of letters, for example, ... a cerebral sedative, something analogous to a good chair that relieves him of his physical fatigue.” Henri MATISSE. This quote from MATISSE resonates particularly in the work of Joëlle DUBOIS who shares with him the same conception of art. Joëlle DUBOIS appropriates in her painting fragments of the vegetal world that she observes over the days and seasons in her garden. Sometimes drawn handheld with acrylic or ink, sometimes imprinted directly on the canvas, leaves, flowers, branches are assembled in colorful compositions that range from the figurative to the abstract. Acrylic paint is sometimes used as juices which allows to play the game of water and to create mixtures where the chance takes all its importance. «I like to leave this part of chance in the dance of creation, because it is a source of imagination and reverie» confides Joëlle Dubois. The garden as a legacy, from father to daughter. Joëlle paints to convey the wonder, joy and peace in front of the beauty of the vegetal world that her father passed on to her from a very young age in the observation of nature. For the five past years, Joëlle has started a series of works entitled “dialogue with my garden” where the species of her garden are explored over the seasons: fig tree, peonies, iris, Paulownia, Crocosmia, etc. Seeking harmony, meditation, daydreaming, contemplation are the key words to describe her work as a colorist. The other themes that Joëlle DUBOIS explores are mainly the portrait expressing reverie and meditation and the cosmos whose observation draws its roots from her earliest childhood.
