Acrylic, acrylic based medium, archival varnish UV protection, oil, and archival pigment prints (collage) on canvas. Fundamental to the work is a process of layering. Just as the very fabric of the painting is formed from strata of prints, fabrics, metallic pigments like gold and silver and oil paint, Vahlefeld collides a multiplicity of references—an overpainted ad of a Joseph Beuys exhibition is one of them. By sanding through the layers, Vahlefeld reveals the hidden textures and complexities concealed beneath the surface. The painting might be an unresolved conflict between finished and unfinished, messed-up and un-messed-up or between content and abstraction. Casual swipes of thickly applied oil paint, and spreading patches of color that occasionally allow a glimpse of bare canvas, permeate the material, further complicating perceptions of flatness and volume.

Peter Vahlefeld's visceral artworks combine a rigorous, process-based practice, continually rethinking the possibilities of painting. Using references to a broad array of sources, including art history, literature, and pop culture, he creates paintings that alternate between flat experience and dimensionality. Perfectly poised between European and American traditions (Art Informel, Abstract Expressionism, Pop Art), his work combines complexity into a visual richness that is neither figurative nor abstract. The paintings unfold in an intricate, unpredictable interaction of layers and excess—a constant juggling of paint, prints, fabrics, mediums and effect. They draw their actuality from the collision between the visual codes of mass media and the subjective traces of painterly expression. Peter Vahlefeld was born in Tokyo, Japan and grew up in Hong Kong and Hamburg (Germany). He studied fine arts at Parsons School of Design, NYC and currently lives between Berlin and Munich. He has participated in a variety of solo exhibitions and art fairs, including Art Fair Cologne, Art Karlsruhe (both Germany), Art Bodensee (Austria) and venues such as Neumeister Fine Art Auctioneers (Munich), Sotheby's (Vienna), Chloe Savigny (Paris), Fiona Alison (London), and 46 Parachute Purple (New York). Having a studio in Berlin, he was filmed there by the ZDF television channel for a Robert Mapplethorpe feature. His work can be found in corporate collections throughout Germany as well as in private collections worldwide.
