From the series: "Cuba a flor de piel"

Sometimes a single person can become the face of a whole society.
This painting represents a scene of a religious procession in Havana Cuba. An old black woman walks towards the spectator with a candle on her left hand. She is going to offer a promise to Oshun: one of the ancient African gods of her grandparents. She knows well what is the meaning of a promise because she has heard many empty promises. She, like all the Cuban people, has been deceived and disappointed by politicians promising an earthly paradise. She only have her faith now.
Her expression is the reflection of a national feeling. As a Cuban artist I have made this painting as an homage to the Cuban people who fight for life, for survival, for hope.
