About The Artwork

"Pythia" was the name used to refer to the Oracle at Delphi, the high priestess in ancient Greece who was said to channel wisdom from the god Apollo. The priestess was named for Python, the serpent monster whom Apollo killed in order to claim Delphi as the site of his own temple. Some scholars interpret this as the story of the patriarchal cults of the male gods supplanting the ancient Goddess religions (symbolized by the snake). But I also think it could be describing the divine union of Yin and Yang, with Apollo not "slaying" the snake in a combative way but rather mastering his primal energy or kundalini and merging with it. Hence the image of his temple being built on the same ground as the snake's home, one energetic structure blended with another. So I like to imagine Python nestled in the earth beneath the temple, friend to Apollo and collaborator with him in delivering wisdom through the Oracle to humankind.
