Quarantine Salon Painting

This painting is based on the salon in Havana, Cuba that my mother-in-law always takes me to. Located in the basement of the radio and television building where she spent her career as an announcer, this was the place she came every morning before going on air to be made up. Typically of a socialist society, the salon is filled not only with employees and clients, but also people who are there to pass their days. When I went during COVID, there was an older woman who had gone for a hair cut days before and had returned every day following, since it was her only opportunity to venture out of the house. On this day, I was captivated by the back-and-worth dynamic and simultaneous action of the women at the salon: customs of hospitality (el cafecito) held back slightly by consciousness of the public health crisis.
