About The Artwork

In 2018, after (barely) recovering from a painful breakup, burnout from work, and depression, I decided to leave social media for good. Instagram had become an addiction and an instrument of self battery: the lives of others always had something more interesting than my own, and my body had become a constant work in progress which I didn't feel safe in anymore. I realised that social media had stifled my creativity and pushed my head so far up my own ass, it became difficult to breathe. 2 years after I left, I wanted to pay homage to the person I was before 2018. The one who scrolled for 4 hours a day. The one who felt her life was worthless unless it got at least 100 likes. The one who wouldn't sleep until she knew the list of everyone who watched her stories. 'Queen of the gram' is a message of kindness to the person I was back then, and a pat on the back for having made the right decision to return to myself.

I am an artist, visual designer, and writer from Senegal and currently travelling between Ghana, Senegal, Mauritius, and the Bay Area. Being an artist is my revolution: it allows me to claim space for my suffering in the universe. I paint to explore how anxiety, depression, and trauma affect identity and shape our relationship to freedom. I am fascinated by the 'cry for help' and all the ways in which it manifests on the human body when it is not externalised. I use art to resist the idea that numbing, whether through silence or through consumerism, is an antidote to sadness, pain, and suffering.
