ABOUT THE ARTWORK
Evolving from my motor sport series I based this new work on the chequered flag. I use the same black to create areas of matt, varnished, and textured paint (the textured areas are raised dots of paint which I built up layer by layer). Light has a key role on the painting as it plays visual tricks of colour and movement. The influence for the textured areas comes from aboriginal paintings, the dots are in this instance raised and not flat. I feel that there is a temptation to touch the painting and this is important as it draws the viewer into the piece.
