A massive, undulating torso emerges from the background – amorphous yet animated. In the work RL/P-18-638, Robert Lanz's artistic language condenses into an almost eruptive appearance. The surface appears like a sedimentary core pushed from the depths: tectonically displaced, with traces of heat, pr...

Exploring the Interactions between Matter and Light: Robert Lanz’s Multimedia Practice www robertlanz com Robert Lanz studied Fine Arts at the Berlin University of the Arts (UdK) and now lives and works in Berlin. Robert Lanz’s work draws on a broad spectrum of painting media and mixing ratios of raw substances, exploring the linear and fractal nature of matter and questioning our notions of continuity. The works emerge from the everyday flow of information, experiences, ideas and memories, which Robert Lanz translates directly and experimentally at the same time. Like a link to the place, the space, that exists only in oneself through the power of imagination. His way of working is part of an ongoing experiment that emerges in the course of the production of continuous trials and continues the artist’s many years of research. Robert Lanz also works in series, sometimes comprising several hundred works on paper. The serial character is reinforced by the dynamic painting style and the motifs, whereby materiality and technique, the time factor, each develop their own unique expression. Robert Lanz’s large-format paintings, on the other hand, are not created in series, they are individual works. In addition to the physical and chemical processes, a material-related aesthetic develops. The process allows a view of the macrocosm in the work through the use of microscopically small particles. In the creation process, the entire color spectrum is revealed through the variation of the metal components. At the center of the multimedia practice is the fusion of substances that are in a continuous, reciprocal interpenetration, comparable to a dynamic interplay of forces and integrated into a network of exchange of matter, technologies, raw materials and light itself. This visionary perspective characterizes Robert Lanz’s artistic exploration of specific materials in various contexts. Lanz’s unique approach allows him to reflect on the status quo and the profound impact of human existence as a driving force. Lanz’s intense engagement with the specific materials opens up a space for contemplating the nature of transience. His artistic practice becomes a mirror that subtly but poignantly illuminates the consequences of human existence. In each context he explores, a narrative unfolds about the interconnectedness of life, matter and fundamental principles, which together form a powerful reflection on the meaning of our existence.
