RAIN” (Reign, Tears From Heaven) I am more of a one name title and it is pretty consistent in my body of works. But sometimes, as this case, the painting becomes so much more, it takes on its own identity and names its self. This is often the case with my strongest work. In the case of “Rain” it remained untitled for quite some time. I post my work on social media and I get comments even interpretations as I go along. It is an enjoyable interaction and in a way this can become part of the painting. A friend and follower gave it the name “Tears from Heaven” – I could see her interpretation. The painting has streams of mica and cascading metallic pigments flowing in a downward motion. The song with a similar name has a depth of emotion in it. (Tears In Heaven –Eric Clapton) Eric Clapton wrote the song after the loss of his young son. My friend who gave it the name had also lost a child. I could not help but mediate on this as I continued creating the work. As a mother I could not imagine what a loss like this could feel like. The emotions felt as I was creating were very intense, I could not help but cry myself and feel just a fraction of the grief felt by my friend. Then I felt I saw more in the painting- to me it looked like 2 Cherubim with wings flanking each side. Almost like guardians, I felt I saw an abstracted form appear. Another said it looked like a person running a race, with arms out stretched crossing the finish line. I laughed and said that must be me- it seems I am always in a never ending race in my quest as artist, always striving for new heights. So I named the painting “RAIN” and added both Reign, and Tears From Heaven as the subtitles, it seemed they were part of the fabric of the creation of this work.
