My works are cross-examination of my thoughts, imaginations, emotions, structures, systems, and general concepts collected within society and the world as I see it. I am continually trying to explore how these ideas, archives, history and what Saidiya Hartman describes as critical fabulation can spark a new logic through imagined lives and portraits. Superficially, I think my works are celebrated for their lifelike form but conceptually they are celebrated for the location of these ideas and forms. I often use these ideas to have a contemporary idea on Black consciousness and Black history. Black people making work that relates to their imagined or lived experiences. Black art is also firmly rooted in narratives which oftentimes were not always written throughout history. And when these written documents exist, they’ve been expunged and erased. I see my work as archiving history for future generations. The only thing that concerns me with the idea of Blackness is Black consciousness and unity. Sharing and coming together to achieve greatness not against anyone else but for us.
