About The Artwork

I painted this in June of 2020, in the midst of racial upheaval sparked by the murders of Ahmaud Arbery, Breonna Taylor and George Floyd. I thought about white supremacy and how it used Christianity as a justification for slavery, and how the KKK burned crosses as symbols of racial terror. I thought about how white supremacy was still justifying the murder of Black people. I thought about EJI’s Community Remembrance Project in which they collected soil from historic lynching sites in Alabama. Hundreds of jars of soil in so many beautiful shades of brown and copper, much like the many beautiful shades of Black skin. I put those shades on a white cross in the center of the painting. I thought about the American flag as a symbol of liberty and freedom, but also of hypocrisy and racial violence. I thought about how Venus, the planet of love and beauty, was visible in the night sky at that time, but love and beauty felt very distant. Reckoning. We have to start telling the whole truth. “To overcome racial inequality, we must confront our history.” - Equal Justice Initiative This painting is dedicated to racial equity and the movement to bring transformative justice, healing and lasting systemic change in our culture. May we end racial violence in the U.S. May we confront our brutal history with rigorous honesty and make amends.
