ABOUT THE ARTWORK
In 2015 I spent a number of months in Bologna, my first visit to the city. It's called "The Red City", not only for its long Left political history but also the colour that dominates the city and its architecture. I was utterly mesmerised by the colour in all its myriad shades and was inspired to create a series of works of which this is the first. I chose to work in pastel because its powdery pigment allowed me to capture the ageing, powdery textures. The work consists of three images, a favourite style of mine that, though not a religious person, developed from my fascination with ancient religious triptychs. The work is framed under glass to protect the delicate pastel surface and will be transported accordingly.

I have been working, exhibiting and teaching in Tuscany since moving here thirty years ago. The main source of my inspiration, as it has been for many artists, is the Tuscan landscape. However, that which lies below the surface holds much more interest. In a land under constant human habitation for three millennia, the layers of civilisation have left a wealth of information going back to the time of the ancient Etruscans and beyond. My personal journey in search of Etruria has led to archaeological sites and museums throughout the Italian peninsula and its islands. I work in various media - oil, collage, pastel and mixed media. I also enjoy the serendipity of printmaking - dry point and monoprint - and the freedom of pen and ink drawing.
