The motif for my painting I learned on a trip to Greece. A pine tree that grew on a slope by the sea had fallen on the sand during a hurricane. But it germinated under the ground and grew up again to continue living on the edge of the sea, almost touching the water with its branches. In this tree you can see the inextinguishable power of life and energy. Pine, as an evergreen, constantly fruit-bearing tree in Mediterranean region, known for oldest symbol of life and fearfulness. Therefore, in Christian art the pine tree is represented as the tree of life. The pine tree plays a great role in the poetic and pictorial tradition of Japan. Even in ancient times, this tree was one of the most important cultural symbols, combining many layers of meaning over the centuries. The pine tree symbolizes longevity, masculinity and strength. The golden background represents a certain conventional spatial environment. The composition's structure is reminiscent of the theme of pine trees on the seashore in Japanese mural painting, in whose traditional interpretation the image was constructed as a view into the distance through the tree in the foreground. The applicability of the hull contrasts with the surface of the waves, which vibrate and reach into the distance. The rigid graphic design of the branches contrasts with the soft contours of the background. In my work, I use gold as a working material that begs different possibilities, whether in texture or color. I am fascinated by the interaction between gold and painting and especially the effects and color tones that thereby disfigure.

Lightfull lightness is the key element of Elena Starostina paintings. Either garden flowers, city views and roofs or landscapes, gently brushstrokes evoke their timeless life-affirming tension and reduced color settings give an abstracted hint to reality, leaving room for the viewer to dream along in an flourishing impressionistic style, including dusky moods. Classical education, more applied, than academic, leads to casual nude paintings. Atmosphere of buildings is deepend with empathy for history by linking sentences and sources. Sensibility expresses in these paintings, which was experienced outdoor, thus they are artful, but not artificial. Dr. Phil. Dirk Tölke, art historian
