Rhapsody in Blue-Violet Painting

The painting was rendered on .125" hardboard primed with 3 coats of Zinsser stain-blocking primer followed by 3 coats of acrylic gesso to ensure a stable and very smooth surface for the oil paint to slide around freely. The rendering is not as photoreal as it appears in reproduction at this small scale. The action of the brush is evident when observing the actual painting. I like painting Irises because of their floppy petals. Growing up, my home was nearly surrounded by irises. My mother called them Blue Flags and told me they always bloom for Memorial Day. I was always fascinated by the fact that they did almost to the day. They always remind me of the long-awaited coming of Spring as I suspect they do for many of us.
