About The Artwork

This based on the brilliant Fantasia 2000 sequence 'Rhapsody in Blue' designed by one of my favourite artists, Al Hirschfeld. I love the piece of music (by George Gershwin) and when combined with the incredible style of Hirschfeld's caricatures it's a brilliant piece.I love the way the entirely two-dimensional and flat planes of colour are used to create depth. I watched and watched it ... meaning I've also drawn and painted it, of course. This is done is a with thick impasto combined with planes of flat background for texture. It's mainly in cool tones to match the music but accented by the yellows of the windows. The texture is made with a combination of wide flat brushes and the lines of palette knives. This piece is on gallery-style (deep) canvas and is painted over the edge, so it can be hung exactly as is without the need for a frame (but it will look great framed, too).

I am from a family of artists, so I took drawing lessons before I could read (though I also read a lot). Even though I grew up in the mountains of BC and will always miss them, I feel I’m very lucky to now live in a beautiful rural area of Nova Scotia that’s near the ocean. I'm steps from a gorgeous path where I can take my dogs and loads of photos, so I will never lack for inspiration. The house I moved in to had a gigantic attic, which I am slowly turning into my dream studio. A researcher and explorer at heart, I am constantly studying and investigating whatever I've become obsessed with lately. Academically, that is the First World War, religion, remembrance, and propaganda. Artistically, that is printmaking, impasto oil painting, and diffused watercolours. I work mainly in oils, chalk pastels, charcoal, and reduction lino prints. I like playing with textures, negative space, and subtle colouring. I tend to make semi-abstract works that highlight painterly marks, especially when made with a palette knife.
