El color de este río se adquiere tras la disolución de óxidos y hierros que dan ese color amarillo intenso al lecho del río y a sus orillas.. Y es este color, unido al paisaje que lo rodea lo que hace que parezca un auténtico paisaje de Marte. La figura diminuta que aparece remando en una piragua a escala 1:220 es parte crucial del contenido de la obra, pues, gracias a ella, la obra se nos muestra sobredimensionada. La Naturaleza se revela entonces en su verdadera dimensión. Esta diminuta presencia humana pasa casi inadvertida a los ojos del espectador real, quien se enfrenta a la obra desde una cierta distancia “de respeto”. Así, el observador se asemejará a un Dios que contempla su creación desde arriba; y el “pequeño observador” se transformará, a su vez, en un “observador observado”.
