About The Artwork

"Rising and Advancing" is one of the hexagrams of the I Ching, the Book of Changes. It was the title of the original painting done on this board which was sanded smooth and now is only visible were it peeks through as the black and blue distressed network of curved and straight lines within the triangle. The triangle points upward and forward - east north east - literally rising & advancing. This painting has the metallic palette I have been returning to over and over this fall. It has the network of lines that signals to me the unseen energy that connects all living and non-living beings of our universe. Custom-built painted hardwood frame. Ready to hang. Signature, title, date and artist inventory number on the back.

I come from a family of artists and trained as a photographer, film maker, poet and printer. It has been twenty-five years since I began making 3-dimensional assemblages and 2-dimensional collages. This led to abstract and text-based painting. In my work, I favor process over planning, building up and tearing down layers of acrylic paint, exploring geometric order and chaotic energy. Most of my painting is done on plywood panels, though I also employ canvas and corrugated cardboard. My color palette ranges from black and gray monotone, to riotous primary colors and pastel shades. As a poet, essay writer, and student of the evolution of written language, I love to utilize text as a visual element in my paintings and to tease the viewer with the limitations of verbal communication. My work has won awards in juried shows and has also been featured in one-person exhibitions. I grew up in Flint, Michigan which was still a thriving midwestern factory town when I moved away. Since then I have lived in Houston, Texas; Cleveland, Ohio; Washington DC; Kabul, Afghanistan; and New Haven,Connecticut. Returning to the mountains that I love, I moved to Estes Park, Colorado full-time in 2018.
