ABOUT THE ARTWORK
This painting came after I made a bas relief wall sculpture of the same subject. Old growth stumps are found throughout the foothills of the Cascade Mountains near where I live. When they are old like this, they are now often surrounded by young forests that have taken over. The old stumps show what was, and even show how they were felled. The notches that held the springboards that the loggers stood on are often still visible, as in this one. The viewer might reflect on the cycle of growth, harvest, decay, and regrowth.
