About The Artwork

In “Riverside”, I have excavated details from suburban Florida. I have used google earth maps of suburban sprawl as compositional elements. They mimic the coral patterns that make up the ground on which we have built our houses. Palm trees, roseate spoonbills, herons, jellyfish and coral fans all still exist in Florida. We have compartmentalized our natural surroundings. We have divided them with canals and streets and “Arterials.” This piece is part of my visual archaeology series. An archaeologist uncovers unrelated clues which are pieced together to define a species or culture. We are surrounded by details that become our memories. Our lives are really very fragile. At any moment, fate could take away familiarity. Our recent isolation from the Covid virus is a great example but fate could be as subtle as the hard drive crashing on your computer. The cycle of death and life never ends. Layer upon layer of details of a comfort zone left behind. I start by drawing the spine from observation. My model is a medical replica of a spine. After applying an abstract watercolor ground I draw with handmade gesso in a ruling pen to create a texture similar to coral. I then work the images into the abstraction. I want you to spend time looking at the images as well as the passages between them. The 300 lb. paper is mounted inside a shadow box. The deckled edges of the thick paper are visible. My intention is to present this as a specimen, an object with an illusion of reality.

Artists Statement...I create puzzles. A jigsaw player knows never to force a piece that doesn’t quite fit. Sometimes you have to examine a piece another way to register the connection. Each piece looks completely different taken out of context.... My drawings and paintings compare unrelated elements. These comparisons challenge the way we perceive our surroundings and each other. The FAÇeADE project attempts to form connections between people based on common human experience. Each portrait and story fit together to illustrate our unique community.... Painting and drawing from life are my discipline and passion. I teach students to see and develop their personal voice. My degree in illustration taught me to tell a story. Studying with painting masters taught me to create illusions.... BIO...Elizabeth Reed never thought she would live in Florida. After sailing from Chicago to the Keys in 1979, she only imagined living in South Florida on a sailboat. Her eyes opened wide when she returned. Her suburban home sits on limestone surrounded by wildlife (the animal type.) The natural surroundings fascinated her, but accepting the diverse community took more time.... Elizabeth draws and paints about the interaction between nature and humans. She considers the elements in her work as unique pieces of a puzzle. She introduces a fresh perspective by rearranging the pieces of nature and community.
