Road Trip #14 was part of a series of gouache studies painted en plain air , well out side in Centennial Park in Sydney. The image was painted from a Video still from a road trip 16 hours west of Sydney, out of Broken Hill, Wilcannia. We had spent time outback painting the red dirt landscapes around the mining town. The landscapes we passed in the car on the two days drive home were just as inspiring, and could only be recorded on film and sketches in the car passing by. The Plain Air drawing in the park was an endurance replication of the drive, exploring the themes of time, but also honouring memories of place, and scenes that many Australians understand, having done the very same drive. There is a cult of road trip that includes the likes of Che Gueverra and the Beat Poets, Jack Keroack, Ernest Hemmingway, Id love to know who else I could add to the list.
