ABOUT THE ARTWORK
All the green in this composition serves to balance the potency and significance of the slender, white cross. It was during the creation of this painting that I realized I was depicting 'animitas'—roadside shrines—because I was grappling with my own interrupted and inadequately resolved grief during the pandemic. By connecting with fellow mourners and their individual experiences of loss, as well as with the popular symbolism associated with grief, I sought to navigate my own sorrows and my inherent difficulty in confronting the deaths of those I hold dear.
