About The Artwork

Subject: Estación Mapocho, Santiago, Chile Description: This painting captures Estación Mapocho, a decommissioned central train station in Santiago, Chile, designed by Emilio Jecquier and inaugurated in 1912. The station served the train lines which climbed the river valley from coastal Valparaiso and continued over the Andes to Argentina, linking the core of Santiago to the agricultural and naturalistic lands which nourished its growth. In the background, Cerro Renca echoes the shape of the station's roofline, while contemporary residential towers and antennae rise up into the sky, highlighting the changing landscape. The painting invites viewers to contemplate our evolving relationship with the natural and built environment and how we navigate through it. Process: Plein-air drawing, painted in studio.
