The essence of this painting is the contrast of the seductive pool water set against the brutalist architecture beyond. The careful layering of colour, texture and light, visible in the reflections on the water, the security glass on the edge of the pool (with a barely discernible solitary sunbather) and the industrial architecture creates an arresting yet contemplative image. Farmer, in considering this painting and the concept of order versus disorder, was aware of the violent history of Chile in which, during the early 1970’s, the Allende government was overthrown in a coup by Pinochet. A military dictatorship ensued through to the late 80’s.

Jeremy Farmer was born in England and lives in London. His tastes in art are eclectic and constantly evolving. In the early part of his painting career, he was influenced by artists such as Hockney, Matisse, Picasso and Rembrandt and more recently by Richter, Katz, Mondrian and Friedrich. He is largely self-taught but has received invaluable instruction and encouragement from his fellow artists: Aris Raissis, Emma Thistleton, Andrew Macintosh, Will Ayres and Jeremy Dickinson at Delta Studios. The places of inspiration for Farmer’s work come from numerous family visits to Cornwall since early childhood. This provided him with an enduring love of the sea and the rugged coastline of North Cornwall. He has also drawn inspiration from a mountainous area in Lower Austria where his wife’s family come from and from extensive travel to more distant shores. Indeed, from these places, the sea, the land and the cityscape are recurring elements within his architectural compositions. Farmer says, “My work increasingly explores the concept of order versus disorder through the observation of structure, light and space and the organic, chaotic world of nature. I always look to experiment and am developing this current line of work towards the semi-abstraction.” In Farmer’s earlier works, he painted almost exclusively in acrylic on canvas, but over the last few years has moved back into oils. The layering of paint is key to the build up of the architectural compositions and the oil medium allows him to achieve a much greater depth and range in colour and texture, and in light and shade. His work is held in private collections in the UK, Austria and the USA.
