ABOUT THE ARTWORK
In order to lighten some winter doldrums, I improvised this honor portrait of Frida Kahlo, based on a variety of reference photos, including two controversial photoshopped photos of her by Roberto Prusso and Steven Meisel. The phallic Cala lilies, the grimacing capuchin, and Frida's necklace of thorns are symbolic of her pain following her breakups with her husband Diego Rivera and the photographer Nicholas Murray.
