ABOUT THE ARTWORK

Small plein air abstract landscape oil painting on canvas. This original landscape captures the color and beauty of an old town neighborhood with its varied light, shapes and shadows. I stood in the back of the homes, finding that a more intimate perspective. As I stood there, I was drawn to the arrangement of shapes and light with the gentle shrub barrier that reminded me of my location. As the painting progressed the scene seemed to garner a sense of community and home for me. There was a wide range of compelling colors that lent vibrance and interest to the composition which helped tell the story I felt nestled within the space. This plein air painting was created from the back of the residences which I found to be a more intimate perspective. The artwork has an abstract influence with a focus on shape and color. There are visible brushstrokes throughout the painting which adds to the character and energy of the painting. The artwork for sale is a signed original that was painted on a gallery wrapped canvas.

ARTISTS STATEMENT: I observe, and participate in, the change of hues. I stand alone in a perspective—influenced by the roads and detours that I’ve chosen. The subjects I interpret on canvas dance with tradition, but underneath exists an individual search for freedom. As a creator, I’ve always been interested in working with color. I see my life as having a palette of its own and I seek to have the chroma of my experiences come through in my paintings. Over time, I’ve realized the only way to achieve this goal is to risk exposure—to unveil my simplified forms to the viewer. Whether the forms operate within the context of landscape or still life, the resulting narrative is always a story of merit, regardless of public perception or understanding. BIOGRAPHICAL INFORMATION: I was born in Vancouver, BC in 1958 and then moved to California which is where my parents originally met. I lived there until I was 6 when my family moved across the US to New Jersey for my father's work. I grew up in a creative family and pursued art in college only to leave it upon graduation, dabbling with it over the years that followed. In 2010 I returned to painting on a more committed basis. This was spawned by some significant life changes and painting became my respite. I still reside in New Jersey and as an artist I appreciate the proximity to both Philadelphia and New York City. I've been showing my work since 2011 and continue to do so.
