ABOUT THE ARTWORK

The colors, shapes and composition of this piece, bordering on figurative, architectural and graphic are intended to reflect the aesthetic energy and pace of the Saint-Germain-des-Prés neighborhood of Paris. The piece is composed of painted paper elements which are mounted to a cradled birch panel. The seams recall the accidental compositions of layered paper advertisements seen throughout the city. The panel itself has also been collaged together with multiple pieces of wood creating a second layer of seams visible underneath the paper- this reinforces the notion of deconstruction and reconstruction and imbues the painting with a sense of history and also implies an invisible grid, a second layer of abstract imagery that reminds one of streets or maps.
