Tony Weiß – Artist Profile Tony Weiß (*1985, Karl-Marx Stadt) is a painter based in Switzerland whose work is deeply rooted in his East German origins and the formative societal transformations of the 1990s. Growing up in a period of transition between two political systems, Weiß processes personal memories, collective experiences, and fragmented identities within the tension of past and present. His figurative compositions often occupy a narrative in-between space: somewhere between the fantastical and the social real, between childhood recollection and political reading. Architectural references from the former GDR—apartment blocks, fences, suburban structures—are interwoven into his visual worlds alongside fragile mythical creatures, symbolic figures, or gestural abstractions. His work oscillates between documentary observation and subjective imagination. Weiß’s artistic signature is marked by a conscious use of color, surface, and fragmentation. His figures frequently appear in moments of pause or inner tension. They carry quiet stories shaped by loss, adaptation, resistance, or transformation. Central themes in his work include belonging, memory, emotional landscapes, and life between old structures and new possibilities. Tony Weiß merges biographical depth with a formal clarity that leaves space for ambiguity and interpretation. He lives and works in Bern.
