During this time we sailed 35,000 nm (approx. 55,000 km) from Europe to Australia. We had a decisive experience on our Pacific crossing: In the middle of the night we were able to observe a fishing fleet consisting of three ships on the radar, which dragged a 50 km!! long net with them. Ultimately, we had to start the engines to escape this gigantic net. Until today I‘m still appalled by the incredible size of the net. This artwork is painted on a part of our mainsail. A big storm tore it apart on our way to Hawaii. Fishing is the greatest threat to marine wildlife. 70% percent of macro plastic at sea comes from fishing gear. Bottom trawling releases as much carbon as air travel. Fishing kills 30.000 sharks every hour. 24.000 fisheries workers die on the job per year.
