Before choosing painting as a profession some 40 years ago Michel played Saxophone in a jazz a band, frequently playing in small venues across France. Fascinated by the rhythms and improvisation of jazz, his musician paintings evoke these same qualities yet using the palette knife, intense colors and bold gestures as his instruments. You can see, hear and feel the music and you want to move with the rhythm.

Whether you are perusing a gallery, prospecting an auction house or just discovering for the first time a painting by Michel Calvet, suddenly you’re entering into a magical, two-dimensional world of color, form and movement. You’re either hooked immediately or it keeps calling you back to look more, to see, observe and find what details are creating the whole image. “The purpose of art is not to copy nature but to express it.” - Honore de Balzac The power of the real artist who has thoroughly learned his or her skill is the ability to concentrate solely on innovation. By using his full range of expressive possibilities through light, color, form and composition Calvet masters how to bring to life everyday scenes and capture the interest of the observers.
