Scent of Gold The artworks painted with gold powder on hanji, a type of Korean traditional paper, are created by using traditional techniques. The most noticeable difference between Far East Asian Seohwa, traditional literati calligraphy-cum-paintings, and Western artwork is that in oriental paintings, spirits are found in lines, and poetic sentiments are found in empty spaces. In contrast, efforts to capture surfaces and light on canvas prompted the development of painting in Western countries. Kim Hyung Jung’s works are painted with gold powder on hanji paper and mounted by master craftsmen. Gold powder is strewn on wooden frames and should be handled with care. Her gold is a mix of pure 24K gold and glue. The use of gold powder applied with a detailed painting technique distinguishes her artworks from others. Pure gold which has a long-lasting and never-changing color is an element which helps us understand the timeless value of a classic piece. The thrill felt standing in front of works of art as well as worldly pleasures are all finite which vanish like a puff of smoke. However, art has the ability to make its viewers long for an eternity that they have never experienced. Kim Hyun Jung interpreted relationship (因緣) as human traces (人煙). The term Seohwa is derived from the latter word human traces and the artist named her two paintings respectively Painting flashing past like a cloud of smoke (雲煙過眼) and Offering painting of clouds and mist (煙雲供養), both of which indicate an infinite and mysterious world resembling smoke and clouds.
