About The Artwork

Seascape, Listening To The Sound Of The Sea This seascape painting depicts a striking cliff at the Balearic island of Formentera. Seascape paintings are one of my preferred pictorial subjects. This one is done with ink and natural pigments, specially pure mineral blue, to depict this impressive cliff, with sea gulls wheeling at sunset. To imbue this modern watercolor painting with the eternal song of the sea, I built up several layers of sumi ink and indigo blue on very thin rice paper, which also evokes the transparent world of the Mediterranean Sea. The seascape painting is mounted with cream-colored silk that harmonizes delicately with the landscape. The hanging scroll has a natural wooden roller at the bottom and is ready to be hung on a wall. Size of the scroll in cm: 243 x 87.5 x 0,2 cm. The wooden scroll adds 5 cm or 1.96 inches on each side. The scroll will be shipped rolled in a tube.

My artwork comprises Zen calligraphy, watercolor and ink paintings, and abstract calligraphies. My mediums are ink, watercolors and natural pigments on rice paper, mainly Xuan paper. I wield the Chinese and Japanese brush, preferably the flexible sheep's hair brush. Many of my Zen calligraphies express the Emptiness teaching from the Heart Sutra, which has been the original inspiration for my Japanese calligraphy artwork. Other calligraphies focus on the teachings of the Diamond Sutra, Platform Sutra, or depict Zen koan, Zen poetry or single kanji. In my watercolors and ink paintings I strive for a pictorial synthesis of the subject, in the spirit of Japanese ink painting, using bold washes and vivid brush strokes.
